4k monitor on the market. ASUS

As of when this review is being written, it is the cheapest 4k monitor on the market. ASUS/Lenovo will bring theirs to the market in a month or so.

This Dell 28" monitor is a great value for the price. It has a lot of connectivity options, doesn't require a high end graphics card for casual (office) use. (don't expect to game on it though - 30hz only). Even the integrated graphics (display port 1.1) on my motherboard (Z87 Extreme4) is sufficient to drive it just as well as my GTX760 card's displayport 1.2. There is no difference in the display's performance between these two sources.

4k monitor on the market. ASUS

There are two problems (for use as a office type monitor).

1. Text on white is EXTREMELY washed out. No amount of adjustments to contrast/brightness could make the text in Outlook or IE more detailed. Text in Excel/Word is reasonable though. Text on Chrome toolbars is very blurry (chrome high resolution problem though - not specific to this monitor). I am not sure if this is because it is a TN panel - colors aren't impacted as much. I have used TN panels in the past, and this looks much worse.

2. Mouse pointer lag. In all honesty, it is not terrible. But it is definitely noticeable. Move the cursor around the screen and you may not be able to find the pointer after that (because you can't see the cursor move fast enough).

4k monitor on the market. ASUS

Since I use office applications a LOT, issue# 1 above may be a deal breaker for me. I am going to try it for another day or two. But after using the U2713HM (and even the 2407WFP) monitors from Dell, the display quality on this monitor is not acceptable.

In response to the other reviews, this monitor is just what was advertised. It is the cheapest 4K display around. It is NOT an ultrasharp color calibrated high quality 4K display. If you need a 60Hz, high-quality display, you will need to shell out thousands of dollars. I decided to wait until the new HDMI and DisplayPort standards are in more widespread use and the prices come down to ~$1k. Hence, I bought this monitor.

he Bad:

- the LED "backlight" is really the cheaper technique of LED sidelight. This means, arrays of LEDs to the sides of the screen.
So compared to CCFL-based displays (cathode lamp), you can definitely see cloudy areas in the lower right/ left corners.

Turning down brightness / contrast all the way to 40 makes it better. But on any dark background you'll notice it. This kind of makes it mediocre for serious photo / design work.
I'm a software engineer, so whatever, but I usually code on black background and it makes it pretty annoying.

Also, I do have to play around with Photoshop and whatnot, from time to time and, well, like I said, it kinds of spoils a chunk of real-estate.

Pros: Outstanding text and picture quality; excellent wide viewing angles; great antiglare coating (semi-matte/semi-glossy); very good gaming performance; HDMI inputs work well with full 2560x1440 resolution at 60 Hz; modern style; compact stand but still sturdy and stable; good physical adjustments; USB 3.0 hub/ports; Display Port (DP) inputs.

Cons (possibly, for some users): No VGA or DVI input, only DP, mini DP (mDP), and 2 x HDMI; does not automatically detect/switch to the input port used (need to manually select the input port when changing inputs); somewhat difficult access to USB ports (all on the back).

I purchased this IPS monitor directly from Dell (Model No. U2715Hc, Mfg. date: Oct. 2014). The installation was easy - you just snap the monitor stand to the panel and plug in the supplied mini display port (mDP) cable into the back of the monitor and the other side of the display port (DP) cable into your PC (or vice versa). You can get an HDMI cable if you don't have a DP or mDP port on your PC. Windows recognizes the monitor immediately as Dell U2715H, so there is no need to install any software, although I normally install the monitor driver as well. As long as your PC/video card supports 2560x1440 resolution it should display that native/optimal resolution when using either DP or HDMI inputs. Although I normally use a DP cable, I also used the monitor with an HDMI-to-HDMI cable that also works well in the full 2560x1440 resolution at 60 Hz without having to do anything extra. This may be comforting to some, as there has been some controversy, in general, about HDMI inputs not displaying the full 2560x1440 resolution.
